Whether your hair is thin, medium, thick, ethnic, or coarse, it can be made to look wonderful if it is healthy. Here are our tips for enjoying healthy hair that will be easier to style, exude more luster and natural buoyancy, and turn heads wherever you go.

Tips for Healthy Hair

First of all, keep your hair clean and well-conditioned. Experts suggest that one of the best tips for healthy hair is to use a quality shampoo that contains moisturizing conditioners and body-building nutrients, or that you use separate products to clean, condition, and feed your hair. Be willing to try several approaches and products until you find the ones that give you consistently beautiful, manageable hair.

Secondly, be careful not to damage your hair. Bleach and chemical relaxers or perms should be avoided, or used only as a last resort, if more hair-friendly techniques don’t give you the look you want. Allowing your hair to dry naturally without using a blow dryer will also minimize damage. If you must use a blow dryer, use Hair Protection Spray to guard against heat damage, and gently towel as much of the moisture as you can out of your hair before beginning.

The third step to a great looking, healthy head of hair is to brush it regularly, to remove loose hair that contributes to tangles and dirt being trapped, and to stimulate healthy growth in the follicles. This is one of the best tips for healthy hair!

Finally, choose the right hair straightener to use at home. Those which will contribute most to a healthy head of hair are those employing ceramic heaters containing tourmaline crystals that deliver negative ion therapy to your hair. This innovative treatment relaxes your hair helps to seal the hair cuticle, locking in moisture. The result is less static, fewer frizzies, and easy-to-style tresses that are not dry and damaged.

More Tips for Healthy Hair

Don’t use brushes with plastic bristles

Always brush your hair before you shampoo

Trim off those dead ends!

Give an ionic dryer a try

Deep condition your hair every 2 weeks

Its fairly easy to keep your hair healthy and beautiful if you use our best tips for healthy hair!

When you spend a good bit of time straightening your hair, it can be frustrating when you can’t figure out how to keep your hair straight! Once your hair is straightened and sculpted, watching your hard work be lost when you encounter humidity or wind can be very aggrevating. This guide will help you take the right steps to keep your hair straight longer after you are done styling.

How to Keep Your Hair Straight

The first step is to make your hair as healthy as possible. Healthy hair is easier to straighten and will hold its shape much better. It should also be noted that longer hair will stay straighter longer than short hair which is more susceptible to curling and frizzing in humidity. Learning how to keep your hair straight when it is short or naturally curly is very important.

Secondly, choose shampoos, conditioners and serums that are designed to relax and straighten hair. Most major hair care companies offer these products that coat hair with specially formulated ingredients, and make them available at salons and general merchandise stores. If you want to try a home remedy that may help, especially with ethnic or coarse hair, mix equal amounts of lime juice and freshly grated coconut, and massage it deep into your hair. After 20 minutes, rinse it out, allow your hair to air dry, and straighten the hair as usual.

Another approach to coating the hair is to use a pomade or silicone-based lotion that will enhance the straightening power of the straightening tool you use. They serve the dual purpose of keeping natural moisturizers in your hair, which help keep it shaped as you desire, and preventing humidity in the environment from causing hair to curl, wave, or kink. They are designed to work for one week up to a month before the need to repeat the treatment.

Thirdly, use only a high quality straightener like the ones featured here. They perform well without damaging hair, and many of them actually work to make your hair healthier by sealing in natural moisture.

More about How to Keep Your Hair Straight

After straightening and shaping your hair, apply a high quality hair spray. Be sure to lift the outer locks to spray the hair laying beneath. Hair product companies offer sprays with varying amounts of hold, so you’ll be able to find one that works well with your hair. The labels will usually let you know what type of hair, from thin, to normal, to thick or coarse, that specific product is designed for.

Use these steps to enjoy hair that stays straight and styled longer, without using harsh, damaging chemical straighteners. You’ll enjoy healthier locks that will have more shine and natural beauty once you learn how to keep your hair straight!

The best way to learn how to straighten your hair is through practice, but you want to be practicing the proper techniques with our hair straightener tips. In this guide we offer hair straightener tips for your hair, so you will more quickly achieve the stunning looks you want!

The Best Hair Straightener Tips

Brush or comb your hair as you start, to make sure all tangles have been removed. You certainly don’t want to iron in any tangles, any more than you’d want to iron wrinkles into a blouse. Then, set the styling iron to the right temperature for your hair. Thin or fragile hair needs temps in the 250 to 325 degree F range. For normal or medium hair, set the straightener to 300F to 375F. Thick, ethnic, or coarse hair will require temperatures between 350F and 450F.

For longer hair, learn to be patient. Rushing the process will lead to poor results. With time, your speed will increase. Until then, put on some great music, grab a favorite beverage, and enjoy the process. It can be relaxing if you don’t rush through it!

Start with the hair closest to the hair line. Use clips to keep the rest of the hair out of the way. Take a section of hair 1-2 inches wide and about ½ inch thick. Gently clamp the straightener onto the hair near the scalp, being careful not to get too close. As if brushing your hair, gently pull the iron through in a fluid motion. Repeat if needed. Then work your way up toward the crown of your head. When you’ve completed that vertical section, move around the perimeter of your head horizontally, using the same pattern, until you’ve straightened it all. Use a mirror to look for spots that didn’t “take” and go over those again.

For shorter hair, the best hair straightener tips state that you start with plates of 1-inch or less, for greater control and versatility. To straighten and style shorter hair, use the same technique as with longer tresses.

More Hair Straightener Tips

Use mild shampoo and strong conditioner to protect your hair

Combining hair coloring and hair straightening can cause damage. Its best to do one and not both

If you are unsure if your hair can take straightening, talk with a professional before you try it!

By following these hair straightener tips, in no time at all, your practice will pay off in hair styles that exude professional quality!

There are hair straighteners designed for each type of hair and specifically, there are thin hair straighteners. In this guide we’ll discuss the right type of models for those with thin or medium hair.

Choosing Thin Hair Straighteners

The most important factor in choosing the right tool is to select one with plates that will not damage your hair. Thin to medium hair is more fragile, more easily damaged, than thicker hair, so choosing titanium or ceramic plate thin hair straighteners are essential. The ceramic might be a coating or a solid piece. Also look for a straightener that employs ceramic tourmaline heaters, which emit negative ions which provide less damaging heat and seal in hair’s natural moisture. They may even facilitate healing for hair that has been damaged with the use of harsh chemicals or overuse of a hair dryer.

The second tip is to make sure that the tool you select has adjustable heat. Low to medium settings are best, with temperatures in the 200F to 325F range. Never use heat over 350F. If a straightener offers only one heat setting, it will almost certainly be too high for your hair.

Finally, if you need thin hair straighteners, and your hair is in the range from thin to medium, you will be better served by a straightener that uses a narrower set of plates. These blades will do a very good job of straightening your hair, and will also offer the versatility of being useful for styling. The thinner the plates are, the greater the ability they have to curl, twist, provide waves, or add the other touches that make hair styles unique. Some straighteners with thinner plates, from 5/8 inch to 1 ¼ inch, also offer rounded edges, which are wonderful for producing a wide variety of attractive styles.

Tips for thin hair straighteners

Make sure you condition thin hair before straightening

If you hair is not just fine and thin, but actually thinning, be super careful when choosing thin hair straighteners

Use a ceramic straightener if possible

Achieving arrow straight locks when your hair is thick constitutes you choosing the best straightener for thick hair to begin with! Thick hair is a bit tougher to deal with, but can certainly be managed. Even thick, straight hair tends to be coarse, and for smooth, shiny, straight hair there are three basic necessities in any hair straightener you choose.

Choosing the best straightener for thick hair:

The first characteristic you should look for is the highest possible heat settings. The maximum heat delivered by the leading models on the market ranges between 380 and 450 degrees F. If you have thick hair, always choose a model that is capable of being heated to 450F. Thick hair holds up to heat better, so with careful use, you won’t stress, damage or burn your hair.

Secondly, if you plan only to use the tool to straighten your hair, and won’t use it for a lot of curling, flipping or twisting, then select a model with wider plates, preferably at least 2 inches wide. These types are rated as a best straightener for thick hair and do the best job of straightening thick, coarse hair in the least amount of time.

Finally, the model you select should employ ceramic tourmaline heaters which emit a steady flow of negative ions. These ions dispel static electricity, and in doing this calm your hair and make it easier to manage. They also allow for more efficient sealing of your hair’s cuticles, locking in natural moisturizers. Finally, they also create infrared heat which is a more gentle way of heating your hair. The result will be that you can safely use higher heat, achieving the desired results without damage. Among the leading hair straighteners on the market, the following all allow for 450F heat and employ ceramic tourmaline technology.

Hair straighteners, like any hot tool used on hair, can cause damage if you don’t take steps to reduce hair damage from hair straighteners . However, by mastering a few tips and techniques, you’ll soon be crafting great hair styles without the risk of damaging your locks.

Tips To Reduce Hair Damage from Hair Straighteners

First, be sure to choose a straightener with plates known to be gentle on hair. Generally avoid Teflon and aluminum plates reduce hair damage from hair straighteners because they do not heat evenly, and you run the risk of burning hair on “hot spots”. Titanium, ceramic, and ceramic tourmaline are good choices. Those with tourmaline ceramic heaters are especially gentle on hair because they emit negative ions that relax hair and get the job done more quickly. These plates also seal the hair cuticle, allowing the locks to retain moisture much more effectively.

Once your hair is washed, brush it as straight as possible and allow it to dry naturally, if possible. Blow dryers, with their intense dry heat, damage hair and also add static electricity which makes the tresses harder to straighten, requiring more time with the straightener, and possibly leading to additional damage. Once hair is dry, give it one more brushing to separate the strands.

The third step is to use proper technique when straightening your hair. Be sure to separate out just small sections to work on. Attempting to work on too much hair may lead you to leave the straightener on too long, jeopardizing the hair. Start with a narrow strip perhaps just a half-inch wide, especially if your hair is thick or coarse. As you are able to work through smaller sections successfully, you can add more hair to find the optimum amount. Begin with sections near the nap or your neck, or right at the hair line. Work your way toward the top of your head. With practice, you’ll become an expert. If you have a friend with similar hair, and they’ve been using a straightener for some time, ask them if you can watch them do it, and learn by observation. Then, do it yourself while they watch, offering guidance as you go.

Expert Tips Reduce Hair Damage from Hair Straighteners

Use the correct temperature for your hair type

Invest in a high quality hair straightener

Reduce the use of products that contain a lot of chemicals

Beyond these basic tips, many salon professionals suggest using various hair care products, with Heat Protection spray being one of them, to reduce the possibility of damaging your hair, and to provide nutrients and moisturizers for a truly healthy head of hair. See our additional guides on these topics for further information or reduce hair damage from hair straighteners.

Hair care products to use with hair straighteners should be high quality if you want to create the right hairstyle for every occasion. Start by using one of the high quality hair straighteners featured here.

However, there are a variety of outstanding hair care products that will assist you in many ways – by protecting your hair, giving it greater moisture and shine, and helping to keep its hold, so your hard work isn’t lost in the wind or humidity.

Hair care products to use with hair straighteners:

Healthy hair is always the best looking hair. It is easier to shape, as well. To achieve the healthiest locks, many hair care professionals suggest using a Leave In Conditioner on a regular basis. More manageable, more luxurious hair that looks and feels silky smooth can be the result when using the two major types of leave in conditioners. The first are classified as detanglers, which moisturize and add shine to hair, as well getting rid of tangles for easier combing. These are usually light products, and come in sprays or cream. They work well with all types of hair, even fine hair, since their light formulas won’t weigh it down. The second class of leave in conditioners are Conditioning Treatments which add rich nutrients to hair. They are a good choice for over-processed, dry, frizzy or damaged hair, and hair of all lengths. During hairstyling, they also help add definition to curls or waves.

Anti-humidity Pomade will help your hair keep its hold once you have styled it with the hair straightener, and resist becoming frizzy in humid conditions. Various brands are available that can be gently rubbed into the hair before styling. To assist the hair straightener in delivering the looks they want, women with long hair often use Smoothing Cream of Gel, while women with short hair opt for texturizer, which is especially helpful in separate hair for flips, twists, and stand-ups. Hair wax, clay, paste, and putty are also gaining popularity because they help to retain hold without being dry or crunchy like old-style foam mousses. They are most effective on short, sporty styles of hair, but work well on longer tresses with gentle curls, too.

To prevent heat-related damage to hair during styling, two products are often employed. The first, Hair Protection Spray, coats the locks to be guard against damage, while making the hair more cooperative to the styling tool. Hair protection spray is the subject of our guide entitled, “How to Use Hair Protection Spray with Hair Straighteners.” The other product is Thermal Styling Spray which coats the hair with a dry lubricant that allows the plates of the straightener to glide more smoothly through the hair without pulling.

Damage to hair and skin, and allergic reactions, are just a few of the reasons to avoid hair straightening chemical treatments. This guide will offer tips to use hair straightener for African American hair.

First of all, select a hair straightener with adjustable heat, and one that will heat to the maximum 450 degree F. African American hair is stronger, and can withstand higher heats without being damaged – it will also require higher temperatures to get the hair straightened.

Secondly, the best iron for your purposes will be a half-inch or one-inch iron, and especially one that offers teeth on the plates. These teeth will be useful for untangling the hair.

Next, prepare the hair by shampooing it and using a deep penetrating conditioner which will soften the tresses using healthy moisturizers. If at all possible, let the hair air dry, without using a blow dryer. Those tools offset the positive effects of the conditioner and may cause tangles that inhibit the straightening process.

The fourth step is to set the hair straightener at medium heat, between 300 degrees and 350 degrees F, and give your whole head of hair a “once over,” to brush out any tangles. Gently pull the hair straight down all the way around your head. Now, spend a few moments dividing your hair into sections for more direct attention. You may also want to apply a leave-in conditioner to the ends of the hair, to prevent them from drying out.

At this point, take a small section of hair and work the hair straightener through it from back towards the fronts. Go as quickly as possible without pulling or snagging. The temperature of the styling tool should be set to 420 to 450 degrees F, for maximum effectiveness. Once you know that the temperature you’ve chosen will not damage your tresses, you may go more slowly to avoid repetition. The section of hair you work should feel smooth, silky and very straight. With practice you will be able to reduce the time it takes, and you’ll perfect the technique, to attain the straightest locks possible.

See our guide How to Use a Hair Straightener to produce straight hair you can sculpt into something creative and uniquely YOU!

Tips on how to curl your hair with a hair straightener

If possible, let your hair air dry. Comb or brush your tresses straight down, so they’ll be easier to divide into sections when it comes time to employ the hair straightening tool. The use of a hair dryer will damage hair and will also create hair frizz caused by static electricity, making it more difficult to curl the hair for the look you want.

Now that your hair is dry, brushed straight and well-conditioned, here are a few steps to achieving gorgeous curls. First, spray on heat protector if your hair is fragile or has been damaged by blow drying or the use of chemicals in bleaching or perms. This is especially important if you are using a tool that does not use ceramic tourmaline heaters, which emit negative ions that help to seal in hair’s natural oils and moisturizers.

Next, divide the tresses into sections one to two inches wide, and separate with clips. Grasp the first vertical section with the plates of the styling tool and curl it upwards towards your scalp. Hold it for about 7 seconds, and then release it. With time, you will know how long you need to hold the curl to get it to stay, without holding so long it damages your hair. Your straightener should be horizontal to the ground. If you want a curl, release the hair by sliding out the tool to the side. If you want to turn that curl into a twist, turn the tool vertically and gently pull it downward to release the hair into a loosened curl, or twist.

Keep in mind that the more hair you curl, the larger the curls will be. For tight curls, select a smaller amount of hair. Start towards your neck, grasping and curling sections as you move toward the top of your head. When that section has been curled, move laterally around your head, until every section, top to bottom, has been given attention. Use a mirror to check each section, and if touch-ups are needed, now is the time to handle them.

Finally, if you want the curls to stay as tight as possible, add hair spray immediately. For more relaxed curls, gently run your fingers through them to loosen them before hitting them with hair spray.

The perfect hair styles are possible, but remember that perfection takes time to achieve. Keep practicing on basic styles until you have them down pat, then stretch your technique to obtain more elaborate styles. Before long, you will be giving tips on how to curl your hair with a hair straightener to your friends!
